The main event tonight between GSP and BJ Penn was a great bout! BJ showed some unbelievable takedown defence in the first round forcing St. Pierre to give up on several different takedowns. He also looked to be doing pretty well in the stand-up department. After that first round, which I thought was dead even, GSP’s pressure, intensity and effective ground took and pound seemed took take over, sapping the life out of Penn.

Penn worked hard to effectively regain his guard several times only to have it passed again. The fact that someone can take you down and then pass your guard with relative ease will break any fighter mentally especially if fatigue has set in. BJ showed that he has a great chin and a huge amount of heart by pushing himself through some tough times in the bout. Congrats to George St. Pierre on a great victory.

I found the rest of the card fairly uneventful which made the longer matches seem to drag on. But I must say that I really loved Jon Jones many throws and takedowns. Wow!! Those were insane! I think with some more striking training and some improved conditioning he’ll do very well in the UFC.

Looking back at my predictions I went 4 and 1 tonight which moves me to 29 and 11 for a correct percentage of 72.5% for main card picks.

What did you think of the event?

At first I was like “Jeff’s got some nobody picked to beat Bonnar? Yea right.” But Jones was awesome. He totally dismantled (a flabby looking) Bonnar.

Machido’s knockout at the buzzer was also fairly impressive. Silva was right out-of-er.

  2. Jay Doyle says:

I thought it was a great night of fights and BJ I think realized GSP was to big and strong to manage. GSP was way too much for BJ and it showed from the get go.

  3. Anonymous says:

GSP totally dominated BJ! GSP is just too strong for him, if there was a 3rd 4th 5th match it would be the same outcome…BJ needs to go back to 155!

  4. Jeff Joslin says:

    Cory,

Wow. Jones some impressive throws eh? I just had a hunch I didn’t know the guy was a takdown machine :).

GSP definately was too big and strong for BJ. BJ had a really good first round. I think GSP’s pressure tired him out quick. I guess he couldn’t hand the riddum ;).

    Great comments!
