Standup from Butterfly guard

This is a technique taken from my online mixed martial arts training system Master-mma. This technique is one I use often to work back to a standing position from my guard. I can also attack with sweeps and submissions from that position.

Here’s a video of my fight in Quebec vs. Nuri Shakir where I used the above technique when I fell to my back after failing on a throw. At first I though he had countered my takedown but then I realized that he had hooked his foot under the ropes, which made him feel like he was 500 lbs. Slick move by him. (happens around 4min mark)

What was the first punch that made Nuri fall?

hey jeff, cool move but I swear I’ve seen that sequence somewhere else first

    hey guys,

First punch was a straight right hand which caught him on the jaw.

It works really well in training. I’m sure it’s been done before. I really started working on ways to standup from the guard after visiting team quest in Oregon to train for a week in 2005. They had some great ways to work back to the feet.
