MMA Conditioning Drill: The Stadium Run

It’s funny how dreams work and how they can sometimes seem do real! I just met Spencer for the first time yesterday and yet a full night of dreaming about training, talking strategy and hanging out with the guy made me feel like I already know him very well. At least until the point when I realized, upon waking up, that I had been dreaming.

It’s just before eight o’clock in the morning. I’m sitting on my bed, typing on my laptop with the sound of birds chirping outside. I must admit that I’m really excited about the first day of training camp. I’ve got a ton of stuff created on paper; striking workouts, groundwork and takedown sessions, some autogenic training for the mind plus many other things that have commonly been apart of my own UFC training camps. The next step, which I’ll do sometime today is to sit down with Spencer and get an idea of how he normally likes to prepare for a fight. After I know that, I’ll be able to make a few changes to the schedule I created and we’ll be good to go.

Time to go hit the shower and get ready for the first workout of the day…

Just got back from the “Stadium” and I’m tired! One of Spencer’s favourite workouts, the stadium blends a ton of stair climbing with many laps around a track. Now I must admit that I have done close to zero running or stair climbing since I recovered from my last concussion a few years ago. With no fight booked, I’ve found it very hard to motivate myself to do those things on a regular basis. Also, the vibrations from jogging and the strain of weight training can aggravate my post concussion symptoms from time to time and it really sucks when that happens. Most of my conditioning work these days comes from hard BJJ practices, heavy bag work, shadow fighting and mitt work. Any other free time I have I like to spend with my wife, kids and students.

Regardless, I jumped into the workout with Spencer and a few of his up & coming fighters. It was fun to push myself out there and I didn’t do too bad considering my long layoff from running. It’ll be interesting to see how my body feels tomorrow and the next day.

Throughout the day today I’ve been asking Spencer a lot of questions about how he’s trained for fights in the past. Once I know that, I’ll be able to adjust the workouts I have planned to fit his style precisely.

Tonight we are going out to eat some food in celebration of a birthday. Should be fun. I’m looking forward to hitting the mats this coming week. I’m really going to miss training with the gi during the upcoming weeks but like I said before, Spencer is one of my favourite fighters to watch and I feel very fortunate to be working with him in preparation for his fight at UFC 120. It’s going to be exciting!
