After a great night of fighting in Brasil at UFC 134, the winner of the UfC 134 Main Event Pick’em Contest is Marky Straughan.

Here was his prediction for the main event fight between Anderson Silva and Yushin Okami:

Silva – Second Round – 2:34 (22 seconds off of the finish time of 2:56)

There were some others that were very close but Marky was the closest so he wins the entire MMA QuickStart Training Program which includes over 18 1-hour workouts, 100+ instructional videos, 12 Follow Along MP3 “Shadowfighting” Audio Files and more.

I’m very excited about this weekends UFC 134 card.

First off it’s very cool that it’s taking place in Brazil and even better is that my friend Spencer “The King” Fisher is fighting in a bout that is being shown live  on Spike Tv.

There are also some great match-ups on the card as well.

I wanted to add a little more fun to the event by giving away my MMA QUICKSTART TRAINING PROGRAM to the person that can guess closest to the result of the main event fight between Anderson Silva and Yushin Okami.

Here’s all you have to do to submit your guess(es)

Pick the (winner/round/time left in round) (ie. Silva/3/2:12). Remember that it’s a 5 round fight. In the case of a decision result, no prize will be awarded so please don’t choose decision as the result.

You can submit up a guess in three different places (named below) s in the above format to increase your chances of winning.

  • One on this blog post via comment
  • One on the contest facebook note as a comment –-> Click here
  • and another one via twitter @jeffjoslin

Good luck!

Coming off a win in his professional debut –in the first round by armlock–, Ryan Dickson (@rydmma) has been steadily building his MMA skills and fighting record over the last few years. He has faced a some very tough competitors throughout his amateur career and has remained undefeated with a 6-0 record (all finishes).

His next fight will be very soon. I`ll post more info once everything is confirmed.

Here`s a recent television segment aired on CH Television about Ryan and his recent success inside the cage:

First off, I must say Capoeira is a fantastic looking martial art to watch in action. The flips, spins, speedy kicks and physical feats of strength and endurance that it includes instantly made the art very interesting to me ever since I first saw it practiced.

Unfortunately I’ve never had the opportunity to learn or train in the art. I think every martial art has aspects, techniques and strategies that can be very effectively applied in no-holds barred setting so I’m sure I could have found a few slick capoeira techniques that I could of let fly inside the octagon.

A while back, on video, I saw a really cool knockout kick scored by a capoeira fighter in an MMA fight. I didn’t remember his name at the time but when another video of him scoring a KO head kick appeared this week I did a little more research. His name is Marcus Aurelio and it looks like he lives in Vancouver, BC.

I think it`s very exciting and refreshing to see him pull of some of his art`s attacks in MMA competition and I must say that it can be very awkward fighting someone like him who fights so different than the training partners most people spar with. I think he`ll need to make sure he`s got solid wrestling and ground skills –and maybe some boxing as well– as backup if he wants to climb higher in the MMA game but I definitely hope to see him jump and spin kicking more people in the future.

Here`s a video of his team, Axe Capoeira in action (he may even been in there but I`m not sure)

and here`s the first video I saw a while back of some slick spinning heel kicks…

and the newest video of him doing his thing inside the cage…

What are your thoughts on Capoeira in MMA?

This past weekend, another BJJ team belt testing took place and as always it was great to see everyone on the mats doing their thing.

Thanks to everyone from Kitchener/Waterloo and my good friend Dragan Konjevic for their hospitality.

The turnout was fantastic with 70 people on the mats rolling, sharing techniques and supporting their friends as they tested for their next belts in the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Those testing were required to demonstrate a large set of techniques and then went on to roll (spar) for a very, very long time with fresh training partners rotating in continuously.

The tough 3 hour session concluded with many well deserved belt promotions.

Congrats to all who graded:

New Blue Belts –> Matt, Mike, Dylan, Jimmy, John, David,  Toni, Andrej and Steve Y

New Purple Belts –> Mike Kocmarek, Mike Samson, and Jeff Duarte

and to Drew Ruttle who earned his well deserved brown belt after many years of training.

You guys all did a great job!

Here’s a video with some highlights from the day

I just want to congratulate one of our team’s fighters, Ryan Dickson on his win this weekend over a tough Brett Biederman. He did a fantastic job inside the cage!

Ryan trained hard for this one!

During the fight, Ryan used a solid mix of striking, wrestling and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to win what was his professional MMA debut by armlock in the very first round.

6-0 as an amateur  –all finishes/no decisions– (and an XCC welterweight championship belt) Ryan has been steadily building into the strong force that he has become inside the cage.

Thanks to the rest of the Joslin team that helped him get ready for this fight and to everyone who came out to cheer him on. We could hear you all from the cage that’s for sure!

Also special thanks to the many great sponsors that got behind us –>

At about 6:30 p.m last night, I blasted out a competition on facebook and twitter and in a short time close to 100 people had entered to win a free copy of my Beginner home training program “MMA QuickStart”. All they had to do to win was pick the winner/round/time left in the round, when either Rashad Evans or Tito Ortiz won the UFC 133 main event fight.

The competition was very close as many people picked Rashad to win the fight in the second round.

Two people picked the closest answer, exactly, so they both win a copy of my training program!

Shawn Gravelle Evans/2nd round/0:35 left

Andrew McCool  Evans….:35 round 2….TKO

Congrats Shawn and Andrew on winning, I’ll message you of facebook to set you up with MMA Quickstart.

Check back before the next UFC for another chance to win…

Time to go watch the smurfs with the kids!

A good week of training…

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Even though the weather has been nice, it seems everyone still wants to hit the mats for some Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or smash the pads and heavy bags in a striking class.

For striking this week, I stuck to the basics focusing on straight punches and all of the important technical movements that make a punch powerful and effortless to throw. I also touched upon a bunch of high percentage combinations that mixed punching, kicking and knee strike techniques together.

As far as the grappling and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes go, our advanced level students spent a lot of time working on the deep half guard position, drilling both attacks and counters to the highly useful position. Beginners focused some of 90+ fundamental techniques they’ll need to know in order to be sure they have a strong and well rounded technical base. There have been a lot of new people on the mats lately and it always good to see the looks on their faces when they realize how effective and fun training can be. It really is addictive!

This coming week, I’ll be teaching many kicking combos to the strikers and side control attacks to those that have an interest in the BJJ/Submission wrestling classes. I’ll be sure to tape a few and post them up here for ya.

Have a great week!
