My Old Weapons Routine (Bo staff)

Here is a video of the last time that I competed in karate style tournament (nearly 15 years ago). This was my weapons routine, using the bo staff. This video was taken at the world championships in Washington, DC.

I used to practice the bo so much! A few months after this competition I decided to focus solely on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and MMA after I ended up taking a guy down into the mount position during a karate match. He was trying to take my head off and acting crazy so I tripped him to the floor. As soon as I had the mount he started screaming “Get him off me!”. The referees pulled me off him before I could sink a choke in :) .

(The first few seconds has two heavyweights sparring)

Police Crack Down on A Canadian Fight Club

I just came across this article from the Canadian Press:

——————————————————————————–

Police crack down on illegal 100-member fight club in Brandon, Man.
BRANDON, Man. – Police say they have uncovered a fight club that has staged bouts at various locations around Brandon, Man., and posted some of them on YouTube.

Const. Ron Burgess says a group called Brandon Beat Down has held fights at school yards and public parks over the past few weeks. urgess says about 100 teens and adults in their early 20s belong to the group.

He says an investigation began after police started getting complaints from concerned parents about their teenage or young adult children getting injured in fights.

A Brandon man is facing a public mischief charge for allegedly giving a false report to police about the club, and Burgess says others may also face charges.

He says efforts are underway to educate students about the dangers and criminal consequences of taking part in fight clubs.

——————————————————————————–

What the #$%$? How dumb can people be?I think these fight clubs will bring some heat onto the sport of MMA and are really dangerous for everyone who participate in them.

Fighting with proper skill and training, qualified referees and medical staff present still presents some danger to combatants. Fighting in the middle of some park with limited training and no safety measures in place is a recipe for disaster.

The thing that bothers me is that someone’s teenage son could be severely injured or killed while doing something that means nothing. That would be a parent’s worst nightmare coming true.

I think the UFC should help educate people about the dangers of fight clubs and unsanctioned MMA fights by having some of the more popular fighters discuss the topic during their televised events.

The Bravado BJJ Open 2009

I spent the entire day yesterday at the Bravado BJJ Open, refereeing and coaching my students as they battled it out on the mats.

The white belts competed first followed by the blues, purples and browns although as the belt rank level increased the amount of competitors in each division decreased substantially. Mainly because is takes a long time to reach the brown and black belt levels in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu . Two belt ranks that few people achieve. Another factor to consider is that many of Ontario’s top Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioners are fighting in MMA or busy running their martial arts schools.

It’s very promising to see the huge group of white and blue belts that are competing on a regular basis at this and other events. It’s these athletes that will feed the higher rank divisions in the near future.

With solid refereeing, great organization and some very exciting matches the Bravado BJJ Open was a excellent event. Congrats to Tony I. and the Bravado crew for a job well done.

Royce Gracie at Joslin's MMA

On September 14th, over 50 excited Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu students had the pleasure of being taught by UFC legend Royce Gracie at Joslin’s Mixed Martial Arts in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.

After greeting the crowd with a quick “Hello”, Royce wasted no time and jumped into action by immediately demonstrating the first technique of the day. Several techniques later, it was obvious to everyone at the seminar that Royce’s teaching ability was as equally impressive as his fighting skills.

During the breaks and after the seminar Royce graciously signed posters, t-shirts, books, and posed for pictures with every seminar participant. As the seminar came to a close, the smiles on everyone’s faces told a story about how the day went; A great night of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training taught by a master of the art.

A few seminar pics…
