The UFC fight train leaves very early tommorrow morning out of Toronto. I’m really looking forward to a great weekend spent watching fights and meeting the many fight fans on the train. Patrick Cote is the other fighter guest on the train and my “In the cage” partners from Y108, Ben and Kerry are coming along.

I’m starting to get excited about UFC 97. I’ll be headed out to the event on the ultimate fight train (http://www.theultimatefighttrain.com/) on Saturday morning as it leaves from Toronto. Here’s my take on the events main card.

Anderson Silva vs. Thales Leites
The main event fight featuring these two highly skilled Brazilian middleweights will not last long in my opinion. I think Anderson will dominate this fight with effective striking and will prove to be too calm and elusive for Leites. Leites has a shot of winning this fight if he can take the top position at some point during the battle but I’m sure Silva’s ground game will be sharper than ever to handle that problem. Not that he will pull off a submission on the BJJ expert but Anderson should be able to avoid making any costly mistakes on the ground if the fight ends up going there.

My pick – Silva by 2nd round TKO

Mauricio “Shogun” Rua vs. Chuck Liddell
In a fight that has been rumoured to being “a last chance to stay in the UFC” both of these guys should come ready to let it all go in the cage. In a recent interview Chuck mentioned that he believes he still has what it takes to be champion which is great to hear. Even though he has lost 3 of his last 4 fights I believe Chuck will be victorious on Saturday night much to the delight of the thousands of of fans at the Bell Centre.

My pick – Liddell by decision

Brian Stann (6-1) vs. Krzysztof Soszynski (16-8-1)
I’m really looking forward to this fight. Krzysztof is a friend of mine and is a really good guy. He’s worked on for many years and now if finally reaping the benefits of it all. I look forward to screaming my lungs out as he battles in front of the Canadian fans. The guys an animal!

My pick – Sosynski by 2nd round submission

Luiz Cane (9-1) vs. Steve Cantwell (7-1)
In a fight between two fighters with similar records I’m picking Luiz Cane to win by KO sometime during the 2nd round.

My pick – Cane by 2nd round KO

Cheick Kongo (13-4-1) vs. Antoni Hardonk (8-4)
Both of guys are coming off a few wins a piece, all of them by TKO, so I think the streak will continue for one of them after the fight is stopped sometime within the 3rd round. Who will win? I’m going to go with Kongo based on a gut feeling.

Awareness is the key

Increasing your personal awareness is probably the most important part of self-defense. An awareness of crime and violence along with an awareness of your environment are the keys to personal security. You do not have to be paranoid, simply be aware of the things that are happening around you. Be alert and use common sense to help you remain safe.

I wanted to wish everyone a happy Easter and to thank everyone for their support.

I myself am trying to shake a cold that is trying to ruin my long weekend. I’m about to head into Joslin’s MMA for our Brazilian jiu-jitsu team practice athough I’ll probably do more spectating than training so as to not get anyone else sick.

Here’s a picture of myself in the middle of my final cardio training session before my fight with Josh Koscheck at UFC fight night.

I wish we had video recorded this workout because it was insane! A workout made up of five 5 minute rounds, consisting of a bunch of exhausting exercises. I remember swearing profusely at my conditioning coach sometime near the end of it all but I never stopped.

As you can see the weather was terrible that day. I jumped, sprinted, lifted, pushed and pulled for 25 minutes in the cold November weather while mud and water seeped through my clothes making it even more of a challenge.

It was because of these intense training sessions which Eric would put me through, that I was able to put in three hard rounds inside the octagon during Spike TV’s UFC fight night.

It’s been said that the fight is easier than the training. I definitely agree!

I just spent the last two days in Toronto doing business related stuff. Before that I was extremely busy teaching classes at my martial arts school and a number of other places. Things are going to be winding down soon which will give me a lot more free time. I’m definately looking forward to that.

I look to get my live internet show, “MMA live!”, up and running again very soon. I will also be a guest on an upcoming episode of “Off the record” on TSN along with some very cool guests. I’ll post all the details once everything is confirmed…Have a great weekend!
